Meaningful Communication

What is Meaningful to EFJ?
Communicating the re-emergence of a legacy company and brand.

Answering the Call
After 80 years in the industry, and with a highly competitive product occupying the marketplace, EFJ knew they needed to rethink their handheld radio offerings. Their vehicle system had a sound digital design. An internal EFJ study showed it could be adapted to the handheld application. The collaboration, like the handset, was to be 2-way. The stakeholders were staked out: police, fire and EMT squads.

What is Meaningful to Agents of Public Safety?

1. They operate 2-way radios with heavy gloves.
2. They use them for personal safety as a club.
3. They work in poorly lit environments, yet don't want to draw attention to themselves with excessive illumination.

Backlight in Motion
Research illuminated a key insight: the backlight has downsides. If it pops on at the wrong time, police and firemen become an easy target for criminals. Second is the issue of battery life. We adapted bundled fiber optic strands lit by a single high output LED, keeping energy requirements low and durability high for backlighting that won't fail.  After scores of tests, tens of iterations, nine prototypes and three final foam models, the the Viking 5100 ES landed. Rain tight, impact resistant, easy to use with heavy gloves and bulky gear; and boasting multi-protocol compatibility, it provides extreme versatility and durability to keep the user safe and in-touch.

Meaningful in Emergencies
Police and firemen would instinctively use the antenna to find the emergency call button in life or death situations. This critical finding led to placement of the "big red triangle" at the base of the antenna. Push it and the cavalry comes!

Meaningful Results
Rugged, lightweight and versatile in both analog and digital applications, it champions all calls to safety.

The Viking 5100 helped EF Johnson reclaim leadership in the Police and Fire communications market and, even more importantly, continues to help in rescuing and saving lives. The Viking 5100 is the recipient of the Good Design Award.
