The petroleum distribution technology and solutions provider Gilbarco engaged HLB to conceptualize and engineer the next-generation gas station fuel pump.

What is Meaningful to Gilbarco?

HLB created a framework of understanding to drive opportunities for the diverse requirements of drivers, station owners and assemblers. Our objective was to take a single-purpose, utilitarian device and transform it into a compelling, cohesive and convenient multi-use environment.

Meaningful to Consumers: Safety and Convenience.
21st century car owners prefer to refuel where it’s cleaner, and well-lit, and even better to get directions, make purchases or find information on the web…..right at the pump. 

To advance its appeal, the pump called for a revolutionary design.

Meaningful to Station Owners: Faster Throughput.
Incidental station sales account for a healthy percentage of sales. Transaction times speed up when the design accommodates changes in traffic patterns.

HLB’s integrated product development approach forwarded the fusion of networked technology, user-centric studies and performance.

Functionalities Merge
We created a self-aligning frame system eliminating secondary measuring, bracketing and drilling. Knock-down construction ensures efficient shipping and easy one-person retail setup. A heightened pump provides a standard hose with 18 inches of additional reach for far-side fills.

And the interactive user touch-screen facilitates purchasing, web-surfing and return business.

Especially at night, car owners wanted a pump that makes it easier for them to see —and be seen by—station personnel. The result is a slim Y-frame that's easy to see around, and takes up less space on the fuel island. Eclipse is the recipient of a Gold Industrial Design Excellence Award from Businessweek.
