iRobot Roomba Intelligence Floorvac Named One of The 50 Greatest Gadgets of the Past 50 Years

Chicago, IL. - Herbst LaZar Bell (HLB), the internationally recognized product design consultancy, announced recently that the iRobot Roomba Intelligence Floorvac that they helped design was named one of the 50 greatest gadgets of the past 50 years by PCWorld.com. The list was determined by the editors of PC World who rated different products on their usefulness, design, degree of innovation, and influence on subsequent gadgets, as well as what they called the “cool factor” of the product.
“With more than two million users, the Roomba is considered by many to be the first commercially successful domestic robot,” said one PC World editor. “Its brilliant design lets it avoid obstacles while sucking up every speck of dirt – including those dust bunnies cowering under the couch.”
The iRobot Roomba Intelligence Floorvac is the newest generation of the world’s most affordable home robotic vacuums. This automatic floorvac incorporates cutting-edge robotic advancements in new intelligent features. The design has a look that is non-intimidating yet high tech, encouraging consumers to feel comfortable using a robot.
HLB collaborated with iRobot to provide industrial design solutions that enhanced functionality, including a universal control layout and warp-around bumper. “Simplicity is incorporated into every feature and control,” stated Mark Dziersk, Senior Vice President of Design at HLB. “Roomba’s advanced intelligence is ironically what makes users feel at ease about it - and it requires absolutely no programming.”
Roomba offers many new design and technological advances, such as an active “Dirt Detect” system with special sensors to detect even the smallest dirt particles. It also includes a self-charging “Home Base” station where it automatically returns when cleaning has been completed. Longer battery run time (up to 120 minutes) and faster charging (under three hours) offer consumers the ability to clean their homes more effectively and with less effort than previous models.
This honor is the latest in an already extensive list of accolades received by Roomba. It was previously awarded a Bronze Medal in the Consumer Products Category at the 2005 Industrial Design Excellence (IDEA) Awards, a 2005 CES Best of Innovations Design & Engineering Award in the Home Appliance Category, and a First Place honor in the Floor Care Category at the 2005 Excellence in Design (EID) Awards.
