HLB Designed Product Takes Second Place on ABC’s ‘American Inventor’

Chicago, IL – Herbst LaZar Bell Inc. (HLB), a strategic product innovation and design firm, announced recently that Word Ace, a game they helped design, finished in second place on the new ABC reality TV show “American Inventor.” Word Ace, for which the concept was initially created by Chicago resident Ed Hall, received praise and recognition from the show’s judges as well as admirers from all over the country, including Hasbro games, which has offered to pursue marketing the game in conjunction with Hall.
A former elementary school teacher, Hall wanted to create an educational game that was fun and challenging, and would motivate his students to get excited about learning. Word Ace is an electronic tabletop word game for 1-6 players. The purpose of the game is to help teach children spelling and vocabulary skills in a fun and interactive way. The object of the game is to be the first player or team to create a word when given a specific set of rules (for example, create a seven-letter word where “s” is the first letter). The game has three levels of difficulty, which also makes it applicable to adults.
"Ed exemplifies the best in America,” stated Walter Herbst, co-founder of HLB. “He came to us and recounted his frustrations in teaching inner city kids that weren't motivated. His desire to help them learn the bare bone basics of spelling and understanding the meanings of words was over powering. Whatever it took, he was going to help the kids. We were truly honored to have been a part of his wondrous success."
HLB initially met with Ed Hall to review a card game he invented, which ultimately led to Word Ace. The HLB team then went to work, designing the total game to include the user experience design, all software and firmware, as well as the mechanical design. Multiple prototypes were built and tested with end users.
American Inventor, the embodiment of the ultimate American dream, set out to uncover the hottest new products designed by entrepreneurs, with the winner being awarded one million dollars to make his/her dream come true. The show celebrated the best in homespun American ingenuity. Hosted by Matt Gallant, American Inventor is produced by Simon Colwell’s Syco Television LLC and FremantleMedia North America, Inc in association with Peter Jones TV.
